The Resin Procurement Checklist I Built After 14 Costly Mistakes (LG Chem ABS, EVA & Polyurethane)

If you've ever had a truck arrive with the wrong polymer on board, you know that sinking feeling. I've spent seven years buying plastic resins for a mid-size processing plant—ABS, EVA, PE, PP, nylon, TPU, polycarbonate, PET, and polyurethane. I've personally made and documented 14 significant purchasing mistakes, totaling roughly $180,000 in wasted budget. This checklist is the result.

It's for anyone who signs POs for materials like LG Chem ABS, LG Chem EVA, or any grade in a resin catalog. It's also for traders moving polyurethane wholesale, because compliance problems usually hit you before they hit the end customer. This is not a theoretical guide. Step 1: Look Up the Full Grade in the Resin Catalog

It might sound like a no-brainer, but 'ABS' is not an order specification. We once ordered 'ABS' and received a general-purpose injection molding grade when our process needed a higher impact grade. The first parts looked fine, then cracked in testing. That was a $4,200 mistake, and it had my signature on the PO.

For any material, especially LG Chem ABS or LG Chem EVA, write down the full grade code from the resin catalog. Check the technical datasheet for the properties that affect your process: melt flow index, tensile strength, impact resistance, density, and processing notes. If the grade isn't in the catalog or the datasheet doesn't answer your question, ask for written clarification before you ask for a price.

Step 2: Map Your Polyethylene Compliance Requirements (and Other Resin Rules) Before You Compare Prices

Polyethylene compliance requirements are one of the most underrated parts of resin procurement. 'Food contact' isn't a single checkbox. You need to know what your finished product will contact, what market it will be sold in, and what supporting documents your customer will ask for.

For example, if your PE product will carry a 'recyclable' label, the FTC's Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260) matter. Per the FTC, recyclable claims have to be substantiated and accurate for the areas where your product is sold. That doesn't mean every resin grade needs a recycling certification. It means you need the evidence from your supplier so your marketing department doesn't guess.

For food-contact PE, ask for compliance letters, migration test data, or whatever your regulatory advisor says is appropriate. For exported parts, REACH and RoHS may appear in the conversation. Don't assume one letter covers every market. I don't have hard data on how many orders get held up for this, but based on our own audits, about 1 in 5 initial shipments had a documentation gap that slowed QC release.

Actually, I'd go one step further: don't let a verbal assurance be your compliance document. Put the requirement in the RFQ, put it in the PO, and put it on your receiving checklist.

Step 3: Calculate Total Cost, Not Per-Pound Cost

I have mixed feelings about price negotiation in resin buying. On one hand, it's part of the job. On the other, I've seen too many good discussions turn into a race to the bottom. My rule now: if two materials meet the same spec, I compare total cost—not the per-pound number that prints on the quote.

Example that still annoys me: one EVA supplier quoted $0.03/lb lower on a 40,000-pound order. That looks like $1,200 saved. But their material had a wider melt index range, and our extrusion line kept drifting. We spent half a day adjusting temperatures and scrapped about 400 pounds before the process stabilized. The $1,200 disappeared into labor, scrap, and frustration.

The value of a consistent LG Chem EVA supply isn't just the material itself. It's consistency between lots, accurate datasheets, and the confidence that the next truck will behave like the last one. I think that's the real total cost of ownership. From experience, this is where 'value over price' stops being a slogan and starts being a budget line.

Step 4: Confirm Packaging and Logistics Before You Commit

A resin lot can look like a great deal until it arrives with torn bags, wet pallets, or the wrong packaging. I remember a polyurethane wholesale order that was supposed to be moisture-protected. It arrived on open pallets with thin wrap, and the edge bags were damp. We rejected three pallets and spent two weeks arguing about responsibility.

Add these to every PO:

  • Packaging type: bags, octabins, bulk truck, or custom.
  • Moisture protection: desiccant bags, moisture-barrier liner, sealed wraps.
  • Pallet condition: type, cleanliness, and whether pallets are returnable.
  • Lot traceability: required lot numbers on each pallet or bag.
  • Lead time and incoterms: not just a date, but where risk transfers.

A 'good price' is not good if the material can't be stored safely in your warehouse.

Step 5: Talk to a Person Who Knows the Material

Honestly, I used to order everything through online forms. Then a bad lot of nylon sat in our silo for a week, and I learned to pick up the phone. A technical sales rep will usually know if a grade change is low-risk or if a request is a red flag.

It took me four years and roughly 120 orders to understand that vendor relationships matter more than vendor capabilities. This is especially true with a broad supplier like LG Chem, where the product range spans ABS, EVA, PP, PE, polycarbonate, and more. One person who knows the resin catalog can save you from ordering the wrong grade.

If you're buying polyurethane wholesale, ask specifically about polyether versus polyester types, Shore hardness, and whether the material is designed for casting, extrusion, or molding. Those are not interchangeable, and the catalog page won't always tell you.

Step 6: Keep an Error Log and Use It

After our $12,000 QC rejection in Q1 2024—wrong lot number, missing compliance letter, and a moisture problem—I created a pre-flight checklist and an error log. We now run every order against the same checklist before it goes to the floor.

The log doesn't need to be fancy. A shared spreadsheet works. Write down: what was ordered, what arrived, what failed, and what the fix was. There's something satisfying about an order that clears receiving, QC, and production without a single panicked email. That's the goal.

Notes: What Usually Goes Wrong

A few things I still catch myself doing:

  • Assuming a supplier's 'equivalent' grade is a drop-in replacement. It might be close, but 'close' is not a spec. Run a trial before committing the whole order.
  • Ignoring moisture-sensitive resins. Nylon, TPU, PET, and some polyesters absorb moisture quickly. Packaging and storage checks are non-negotiable.
  • Waiting until the truck arrives to ask for compliance documents. Ask for them with the quotation and confirm again before shipment.
  • Making the same mistake twice because I didn't write it down. The checklist matters more than memory.

This checklist worked for us because we're a mid-size operation with a QC lab and a receiving team that follows instructions. If you're a smaller shop or a resin trader, you'll need to adapt. I can only speak to my own context, not every plastics business.

But I can tell you this: if you have a resin catalog open and you're tempted to send 'ABS' or 'EVA' as your specification, stop. Look up the grade. Check the compliance requirement. Add up the real cost. That's the difference between a cheap order and a profitable one.
