Which PE grade is specified? (HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE?) What density and melt index? Who owns the tool and what's the maintenance schedule? Are dimensional checks documented per batch? What are the acceptance tolerances?

If the answer to any of those is 'don't worry, we've done it before,' that's a warning sign. In quality, 'trust me' is not a specification.

Plastic OEM vs private label—what's the real difference?

This is the question that confuses a lot of buyers, and the terms get used interchangeably. They shouldn't.

Plastic OEM means the plastic part is manufactured to your design or with your specified materials. You might own the mold, or at least control the engineering. The factory is producing according to your drawings and specs.

Private label means the factory has a product—maybe a bottle, a closure, a container—and you put your brand on it. The factory already controls the design, material, and process. You choose packaging and maybe a color variant, but you're not changing the core part.

The difference matters for cost and control. Private label is usually cheaper because there's no tooling investment and no custom engineering. But you inherit the factory's material choices and quality level. OEM gives you control, but also gives you responsibility for specs, testing, and defects.

Neither is better. They're different risk profiles. If brand perception depends on durability, OEM with a specified LG Chem resin may be the right call. If you're launching quickly, private label might get you to market faster.

How do I avoid off-spec or counterfeit LG Chem resin?

Counterfeit and gray-market polymer is a real issue. I can't give an exact percentage, but in our audits, roughly 60-70% of suspect lots failed at least one critical datasheet test.

For deadline-critical production, yes—but only if the supplier can actually guarantee the date.

In March 2024, we paid a $400 expedite fee to rush a TPU order. The alternative was missing a product launch that would have cost far more. I've also paid for rush delivery and watched the truck arrive late. Paying for speed doesn't mean much if the logistics plan isn't solid.

The thing about rush fees is simple: you're not paying for speed, you're paying for certainty. A supplier who says 'probably Tuesday' is not giving you certainty. A supplier who says 'you can cancel if the truck hasn't left by Thursday' is.

I get why people avoid expedite fees. Budgets are real. But in my experience, an uncertain cheap delivery can be more expensive than a reliable rush fee. The cost of downtime is usually much higher than the premium.

You can get a great price on one lot and then a different performance on the next. For ABS, EVA, and TPU, consistent melt flow and moisture control are essential. If the supplier can't show historical CoA trends or a stable supply chain, you're gambling.

Color consistency is another hidden issue. If you're molding branded parts in a called-out color, ask for color chips and tolerances. The Pantone system gives a useful reference for color matching—industry standard color tolerance is Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors (per Pantone Color Matching System guidelines). A quality supplier will verify colors over multiple lots, not just the first one.

Bottom line: it's not about finding the cheapest resin. It's about finding a supplier that can hold the spec every time. That's the part that doesn't show up in a quote, but it's the part that determines whether your product is consistent.
